Jennifer Parker

Academic Background: Dr Parker is a scientist who did her graduate work in an interdisciplinary laboratory that studied an insect-borne bacterial disease of wine grapes. Her research focused on the bacterial aspect of the disease, and she has experience using 16S rDNA to identify bacterial species and in isolating bacteria from plants and insects. During her time in graduate school, she also gained experience proofreading and editing scientific papers, scientific poster presentations, grant proposals, and correspondence written by colleagues who spoke English as a foreign language. She has also taught chemistry and biology at the college level. In addition to her work in the life sciences, she earned a law degree (JD) and specialized in studying intellectual property law. She received awards for academic excellence in several courses related to patent law and was the recipient of the prestigious Witkin Award. As part of her JD studies, she proofread and edited legal briefs. She is qualified to practice law in California and before the US Patent and Trademark Office, and she has experience drafting US patents with a focus on the life sciences.

Editing and Reviewing Experience: When Dr Parker was doing her graduate work, she spent at least two years as the only native speaker in the laboratory other than the primary investigator. During that time, she assisted her colleagues in preparing a variety of oral presentations, posters, scientific papers, grant proposals, and correspondence. Later, she became a freelance editor and she is an expert in editing papers in the life sciences and has experience editing papers in biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, agriculture, plant biology, cellular biology, evolutionary biology, environmental science, and nanobiotechnology. Dr Parker has received multiple “outstanding” ratings for her work and has worked with clients from South Korea, Japan, China, Brazil, and Kuwait. She is also a volunteer transcriber and reviewer for the “By the People” project, which is sponsored by the Library of Congress.
